BMW pushed a Spider-Man promo to millions of dashboards via an over-the-air update, affecting every car running iDrive OS 7 through X. A full-screen banner greets you when you start the car. Remember when Apple “offered” a U2 album and had to make a tool just to remove it? Three years ago a BMW VP said “your car is your last private space.” The software-defined vehicle era is great for digital delivery, but ad-hoc ad delivery like this doesn’t make sense with so many other mechanisms that would actually help drivers and passengers like location based suggestions. Nevertheless, paying for the vehicle and software subscriptions should also allow the user to disable these features.
